For the past few months I’ve been delving into the wonderful and slightly weird world of natural toothpaste. While there are a quite a few natural teeth cleaning products on the market, very few of them actually sound… well, appealing. I sort of expected I’d have a to try a few to find one that worked for me (and actually tasted okay) but as I go along I thought I might as well report back my findings and thoughts on each paste.
The first natural toothpaste that I tried was the Weleda Ratanhia Toothpaste. Weleda is a well known and respected natural brand and I’ve used quite a few of their skin products in the past. Their natural toothpaste range includes four flavours; Ratanhia, Calendula, Plant Gel and Salt. I have to be honest and say that absolutely none of these sound appealing, hence why I went for Ratanhia as it sounded the more flavoursome of the four!
The Weleda Ratanhia Toothpaste is designed to help improve gum health and reduce the risk of cavities, through the natural ingredients Ratanhia and Myrrh. It has a chalky base which is what helps to clean the teeth and removes stains. It’s supposed to be favoured with peppermint essential oils, but I have to say that I can’t really taste that. This toothpaste has an odd taste – its neither good nor bad.
This toothpaste does do a good job of cleaning the teeth and my teeth do feel smooth afterwards. It doesn’t froth up much like normal toothpastes, so you need to use quite a bit to feel like your cleaning your teeth with more than just water. Since it’s a pink colour it also tends to ruin your toothbrush a bit, leaving it looking pretty stained and dirty after just a couple of uses (really not pleasant!) This toothpaste also does nothing in keeping your breath fresh and my mouth never really feels clean after using this paste.
Personally I’m really not a fan of this one, and I’m really struggling my way through the rest of the tube. I won’t be repurchasing, and I think I’ll be giving the other Weleda pastes a miss too. If you’ve tried any natural toothpastes, then please let me know – I’d love some good suggestions!
