Pregnancy Diary: Week 33 – 34

Pregnancy Diary Week 33: The diary of a first time mum

Pregnancy Diary Week 33

I’m not going to lie, this week sucked! We had our appointment with the obstetrician in Dunedin, and thankfully she is lovely. Sadly, they’ve told me I need to be in Dunedin from week 34 onwards in case of any bleeding with my placenta previa/low lying placenta. While I haven’t had any so far, the risk can increase from week 34 onwards, and currently we live too far away from the hospital for it to be deemed safe if it was to start. I’m so thankful that Mum and Dad live in Dunedin and I can stay with them for a few weeks, as otherwise I’d have to stay in the hospital and that would actually be my worst nightmare as I hate hospitals. Imagine feeling fine and being stuck in one!

We have the next scan at 36 weeks, and a follow up appointment with the obstetrician right after that. That scan will determine whether the placenta has moved enough to attempt a normal birth. It needs to move 2cm to be deemed completely safe, but some people choose to attempt a normal birth if it’s only between 1-2cm, however the chance of needing an emergency C-section increase. This isn’t something I want to risk, so if it’s at all under 2cm I’ve asked to be booked for a C-section. I’d rather be prepared then not know what I’m going in for, especially living so far away.

I also had a physio appointment this week to try and help with the pain I’m getting in my hip. I thought it might have been sciatica, but it’s actually a joint in the hip that’s giving me grief. Apparently the joints relax during pregnancy and this can cause muscle pain. I’m not sure really whether the physio did anything though, in fact I think it might have made it worse. At least the end is in sight now though!

In exciting news, finding the chimney in the walls and taking that out has meant that we have space to put in a massive wardrobe in our room! It will be about 3 meters long which should fit all my shoes and clothes just nicely 😉 While it might still be a couple of months away until we have the wardrobe fixtures and doors installed and it’s able to be used, I’m just so excited to have somewhere nice to store all of my stuff!

Pregnancy Diary Week 34

On Monday I headed up to Dunedin to stay with my parents. I’ve now packed my hospital bag and baby’s hospital bag, so I have all of that ready to go when needed. I’ve also washed all of bub’s little onesies and blankets, so I think I’m pretty prepared (famous last words, maybe?!). I also purchased a baby monitor, which was one item I was really struggling with as there are so many mixed reviews on many of the models available here in NZ. Anything that had a half decent review online wasn’t available here! I settled on a no-frills Motorola audio monitor for $50 which had good reviews and doesn’t run on batteries so it doesn’t die, here’s hoping it’s all good! All that’s left to buy for bubs now is the capsule carseat and I know which one I’m getting so that makes things easier.

While I feel so lucky to be able to stay at my parents house, it’s so weird staying in someone else’s home and I already can’t wait to get back home and feel like I can get some stuff sorted. I feel a bit useless up here, so I’ve just been doing some little DIY projects that will make baby’s room look cute, like decorating some storage boxes for the wardrobe. Luckily I’ve also had a few appointments and work to keep me busy, as well as getting all the last minute things for baby. There’s a lot of little things like baby towels, baby brushes etc that I still needed to get, so I’m getting all of them ticked off the list. I’ve also been buying a few new home decor items and necessities like the toilet roll holder for the toilet room and all those other little things that you sort of forget about. It’s kept me busy heading out to get them all, and it’s making the time go faster while I wait for this scan appointment!

I had my whooping cough jab this week, and this is another one where I’ve read people feel sick or sore afterwards. Honestly, I think way too many people try to scaremonger others over half of this pregnancy stuff, as this jab was a piece of cake! In fact, I didn’t actually feel it go in and couldn’t believe how quick it was over.  Afterwards I had to wait around for 20 minutes just in case of a reaction, but I felt fine so was able to go. If this is something you are worried about, honestly don’t be! I hate needles and I found it easy peasy.

How many weeks? 35
Size of baby? The size of a honeydew melon…. it feels like it too!
Total weight gain? Just over 1kg in two weeks. So up 8kg in total now
Cravings? Still loving that Caramel Whittakers! And cranberry juice…. seriously all the fruit juice right now!
What I miss? There are some nights I’d love a cheeky Rekorderlig!
What I’m looking forward to? Getting this scan over and done with!

I’ve heard that a planned c section is so much easier to handle mentally and physically, as you aren’t then sore in two areas etc. I hope either way things work out for you – I’ll be keeping a close eye on your posts! xxx

Thanks Lena! A planned C-section puts my mind at rest as I know what to expect, I’d hate to try for a natural birth and then end up having to have a c-section anyway! It’s nice having a date he’s going to be born too! x
