A Day in the Life of a Five Month Old

A Day In the Life of a Four Month Old

If I think back a year (or even 6 months), it’s amazing how much my life has changed (for the better!). I had originally planned to do a “day in the life” post when I was pregnant and I never got around to it (surprise, surprise 😅). So I figured why not capture what an average day looks like now and share it with you. I warn you, it’s not particularly exciting and things do change from day to day (especially if we are up in Dunedin for the day), but here’s how a typical day looks for me with my wee five month old sidekick.

A day in the life of a five month old

6.30AM: I wake up to Jack’s chatter through the baby monitor. Sneaking into his room, I watch him chat to his friends in his cot, before it’s up out of bed and ready to start the day. It’s time for a bottle for Jack, before time for a much needed nappy change.

7.00AM: Jack plays on his playmat and stretches and practises his rolling while I enjoy a coffee (or two). If he’s super energetic then it’s into the Jolly Jumper for a bit of a bounce.

8.30AM: It’s off to bed for Jack’s first nap of the day. Time for me to enjoy a coffee and breakfast while checking my phone. Then it’s time to sort, fold and put on washing, unload the dishwasher and get all of Jack’s bottles ready for the day, before going for a shower and getting dressed for the day.

9.15AM: Jack wakes up so he sits in his bouncer while I finish getting ready and do my makeup. We listen to music and sing silly songs and he squeals and squeaks along. We then get Jack dressed and ready for the day.

9.30AM: Time for Jack’s second bottle, then it’s time to play. Today it’s a couple of stories, a bit of time sitting up and playing, tummy time, and a kick around on the mat. Then it’s time for his favourite time of the day – going in the Jolly Jumper!

10.30AM: Time for breakfast! Jack sits in his highchair and enjoys some Farex cereal mixed with mashed banana. Then it’s time for more play. Jack plays happily on his mat while I do a few chores.

11.00AM: Jack is in bed for his next nap, so it’s time to do my cleaning for the day! I first have a quick tidy up and put all the toys away. Then I do whatever cleaning is due for the day. Today it’s the kitchen, bathroom, and toilet. Then a quick lunch before a bit more time on the computer.

12.45PM: Jack wakes up so it’s playtime on the mat with his toys. We also try a bit of tummy time (which Jack hates with a passion). He tries to claw his way across the floor before giving up and lies there sucking his thumb.

1.30PM: Lunchtime bottle, then it’s time to head out for a walk around the town. This lasts about 30 minutes before it’s home for some time in the Jolly Jumper. Jack enjoys screaming at his duck while in the jumper so he’s usually pretty pooped by the time he is done.

3.00PM: Off for the last nap of the day. I spend ten minutes trying to get Jack to put his legs under the blanket before giving up. I sneak back in later once he’s asleep and put the blanket over him. I grab a snack and a cuppa and attend to anything that needs doing, whether that’s blog stuff or cleaning. Today it’s editing some photos for the blog and putting up a blog post.

4PM: Jack wakes up (he’s kicked off the blankets part way through his nap, Jack 1, Sarah 0) and he’s hungry so it’s time for his next bottle and a cuddle. He’s a bit grumpy so I let him watch some little videos on the iPad.

4.45PM: Time for a bit more jumping in the Jolly Jumper.

5.15PM: Dinnertime! Tonight Jack is having is favourite, Watties Beef, Potatoes, Pumpkin & Carrots! The look on his face when I say “all gone” is a look of horror. Then the bottom lip quivers before I rescue him by giving him his cuddly. Time for me to go and scrape the food off his bib and put it in to soak!

5.30PM: Time to start winding down for bed. Jack has some quiet time in his bouncer with some quiet toys. Sometimes he falls asleep for a few minutes, but I never let him sleep for more than ten as I want him to be sleepy when it’s time to go to bed!

6PM: Time for a bedtime bottle and then it’s over to the change mat to get undressed for his bath.

6.10PM: Bath time  Beforehand I quickly clean up all of his toys and get his room and pyjamas ready.  After his bath it takes a while to get him dried, dressed and ready for bed.

6.25PM: We read his favourite book “Angel Bear” every night before bed. Then it’s off to bed and time to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I give him a kiss, tell him I love him, and then leave the room. He might grizzle for a minute or two, but more often than not he just lies there quietly before falling asleep. (read our night routine here)

6:30PM: Time to get into my PJ’s and take my makeup off… bliss! I’m also big on skincare, so I do my full pre-bedtime skincare routine too. It’s also time to load the dishwasher and put away all of Jack’s toys and blankets so that the house is a wee bit tidier!

6.45PM: It’s time for me to have some dinner.

7.30PM: Time for a cup of tea and Netflix. Tonight it’s a Christmas movie!

9.30PM: Bedtime (aka time to go on social media for about 30 minutes before I drop off…)

Jack sleeps through the night, so I don’t hear another peep out of him from his 6.30pm bedtime until about 6-6.30am in the morning. Click here, to read how we got him to sleep through the night
