Wardrobe Essentials: The Denim Skirt

I like to share a lot of fashion related content on here which is designed to give you ideas for different pieces that you might like, and also with tips and ways to style them. I have a lot of clothes, and I’ve been incredibly lucky to have been gifted a lot of them for the purpose of this blog. That being said, I wanted to create a series that narrowed down the pieces which I consider to be “wardrobe essentials” – those pieces that are core items that can be worn and styled in a number of ways. These are the pieces, that if I was creating a wardrobe all over again, are the pieces I would begin with.

The first item I’m going to share with you is a denim skirt. This is an item that’s so perfect for Spring and Summer and is an incredibly versatile piece to wear. There are many different styles of denim skirts and it’s possible to find one that suits most body types. Whether you prefer high-waisted or mid-rise, mini or long length, rips or no rips, dark or light wash, and even classic A-line versus fitted – there really is a skirt for everyone. I’ve even seen some with elastic in the waistband for a perfect (and comfortable fit).

When it comes to choosing a skirt, I like to look for one that is higher-waisted as I love to be able to tuck or half tuck in my tees and this looks best with a higher rise. I also love a mini length, hitting just on the mid-thigh, due to the fact that I’m on the shorter side, so this makes me look taller.

A fitted denim skirt often is a stretchy style denim and hugs all your curves and makes your bum look amazing. This is quite a popular style of fit currently, and it’s also super comfy due to the soft stretchy denim. A-line styles are generally made from a more rigid denim and are less fitted through the bum and offer the more A style shape.

Rips versus no rips is totally a personal choice, and depends on how you like to wear the skirt. For a more on-trend and casual style, look for a light distressed skirt with a raw hem, and for more of a classic look go for a hemmed A-line, mid-wash which will have you covered for all occasions.

If you are wanting only one “go-to” denim skirt in your collection, I’d recommend opting for a classic A-line, no rips look. For a bit of a twist on a classic black skirt, I’m also currently loving the black wash denim skirt.

For these photos I’m wearing the new Daisy Denim Skirt from Junkfood Jeans. It’s a mid to high-rise style (depending on preferred fit which makes it more versatile), with a raw hemline and distressing on the front. It’s a super stretchy fitted skirt thats extremely comfortable. The mid-blue wash makes it super easy to pair with practically any colour.

Here’s a few ways to style a denim skirt

  • Tee and ballet flats (so easy to throw on! Knot the tee for an on-trend look)
  • Band tee and booties (pair with cuff bracelets for a more edgy look)
  • Oversized jumper half tucked, paired with booties and a fedora (perfect for Fall!)
  • Singlet top and kimono (classic, easy summer style)
  • Henley long sleeved rib top, tucked in, paired with sock booties (super cute for transitional seasons)
  • Swimsuit and flip flops (denim skirts make the perfect coverup at the beach)

Fit tips: I have the Daisy Junkfood skirt in a size XS (8). I am usually a size 6 and could totally have done a size 6 in this as it is a very stretchy denim. The waist is a tiny bit loose on me, but I can still get away with it. The fit through the bum and legs is very flattering, and I love the length – for reference I am 163cm (5’3″)
