Frank Green Drink Bottle Review – Is It Worth the Money?

Frank Green Drink Bottle Review

If you are on Instagram, then it’s likely you’ve seen Frank Green drink bottles and cups EVERYWHERE lately. This bottle has absolutely blown up on social media with people raving about how amazing they are. They are especially popular in New Zealand and Australia, and are sold online and in selected stores in these countries.

A couple of months back I got the 1L Ceramic Reusable Drink Bottle. While there are heaps of colours and combinations to choose from, I got the blushed pink one. There’s no denying it, the Frank Green bottles are aesthetic and really look the part no matter whether you are at the gym, beach or travelling. The blush pink one I have is super popular on Instagram, and often sells out. I thought I’d do a Frank Green Drink Bottle review with all the pros and cons of these bottles, so you can decide whether this is something you want to invest in or not.

The idea behind Frank Green is excellent – it’s all about being eco friendly. That’s why you are able to buy various parts for the bottles, including replacement straws and lids. This is great as it means the whole bottle isn’t wasted should a small part on it needing replacement. As well as bottles, they also offer a line of reusable coffee cups – also with replaceable parts.

The Frank Green Ceramic Bottles come in two sizes – 1L and 2L. It should be noted neither fits in a car cup holder without an extender. I have the 1L and it’s quite bulky and heavy, so I image the 2L would be huge, especially for travelling. They are extremely water tight so you don’t have to worry about it leaking all through your bag. The bottle also keeps water chilled to the perfect temperature – even when it’s left in the sun or the hot car. This makes is so good for summer travels or those long summer beach days!

Frank Green Drink Bottle Review

The bottles are ceramic lined which is designed to stop the water from tasting metallic and nasty. I can say this is absolute rubbish and one of the reasons why I wouldn’t recommend these bottles. Upon receiving mine I washed it out with water and a little dish liquid. The next few times I filled the bottle, the water tasted absolutely terrible (even after only an hour!). I shared this on my Instagram and received so many messages from people saying the same thing had happened to them and that they could never get rid of the taste!! So many people were really disappointed with this, especially as Frank Green do mention on their website that this won’t happen.

Thankfully I did find that warm water and baking soda did remove the smell and taste. Simply fill the bottle with warm water and a teaspoon of baking soda and let it sit for a few hours, giving it a shake every now and then. You might need to repeat this a couple of times (I also tipped mine upside down and let it sit for a while). This seemed to remove the metallic taste, however I really don’t believe this should have to be done!

The other thing I don’t like about these bottles is how quickly they get scuffed up! I’ve only taken mine out twice so far (one in the car and once in my beach bag) and it’s already got black scuff marks all over it as well as some random pink marks where it’s obviously pushed up against something. I feel after using it for a few months it’s going to look an absolute mess and that makes me so sad as it’s such a pretty bottle!

The other thing I really don’t like is that you have to open the bottle by pushing on the straw bit, which is super gross when you are out and about as you are touching the part you drink from.  It’s quite hard to open too so you really have to grab it and pull it. In COVID times this probably isn’t the best design feature! I do like the idea of the straw though, and the straw itself is metal which means it will last (and is eco friendly!). Drinking through a straw weirdly makes me drink more water than when sipping it out of a bottle, so the straw idea gets a thumbs up from me.

Would I repurchase? Nope, absolutely not. I’ve really been put off Frank Green because of the metallic tasting water and the fact the bottles mark so badly. It’s a real disappointment for a bottle that costs $60+ and I think there are much better options out there. In fact, for travel cups I highly recommend Made By Fressko as they don’t mark or cause any taste/odor issues (feel free to use my code SARAH15 for a discount when you buy from Natural Things!) I do like the 500 ml Sweat Republic drink bottles, and I’m on the hunt for a 1L bottle that I could also recommend.

Have you tried these bottles? Would you agree with my Frank Green drink bottle review? Let me know your thoughts on these below!
