Elephant Rocks – A Step Back in Time

Nestled in the Waitaki Valley, inland from Oamaru is one of the most unique places I’ve visited recently, Elephant Rocks. And while I can’t say any of them exactly resemble an elephant, it’s definitely a fun and interesting place to explore!

It’s important to note this is Elephant Rocks in the South Island, not to be confused with Elephant Rock in the North Island which is by the beach.

These South Island rocks are literally located on the middle of a farm in the middle of nowhere, and are absolutely massive! It’s no wonder that this location was chosen for scenes in the Narnia movie – it’s like stepping into a whole new world. With stunning views out to the Southern Alps, it really feels like quite a magical spot. Kids will love running around and climbing on the rocks – just watch where you put your feet! It is a farm and there is quite a bit of cow poop around, so also be sure to wear decent shoes.

How to Get There

Elephant Rocks is located on Island Cliff-Duntroon Road, just out of Duntroon in North Otago. It takes around 40 minutes to get to from Oamaru, and the elephant rocks are well signposted on the Oamaru to Duntroon road. The road is sealed the whole way and there is plenty of signposted parking when you arrive. Cross the road and through the gate on to the farmland and you will see the rocks.

Be sure to close all of the gates behind you and leave the farm as you found it, including taking any rubbish away. This is private farmland and it’s kind of the landowners to allow public access.

History of the Rocks

I did a little bit of research about these rocks, as I am by no means any expert on geology! The area was actually an ancient seabed, and the rocks are formed from limestone that moved with tectonic pressure and were eroded over time by the elements. They have now formed into the uniquely shaped rocks that we see today – now at 23 – 25 million years old!

There are now hundreds of rocks scattered over the nearly 200 metres of pastures, in all different shapes and sizes. Some are shorter and flatter, others are tall and long, with some of the tallest standing at nearly 10 meters tall.
