Over the years my hair has had a bit of a hiding. I’ve been bright blonde, reddish brown, dark brown, light brown – you name it. I’ve even swapped back between blonde and dark a few times! Right now I’m back to blonde and my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been. I’m getting my hair highlighted every 4-6 months and allowing a bit of natural regrowth to come through in-between and I finally feel like I really really love my hair.
Over the years I have tried SO many different things for hair health, and I have finally found the things that really make a difference to how healthy my hair is. Here’s my key tips for hair growth!
DON’T OVER COLOUR
Since I’ve stopped colouring my hair all the time, it has gotten SO much healthier! When I was bright blonde, I was having to get my hair highlighted every 2-3 months. When it was dark it was even worse as my naturally light hair came through, making my hair look grey! So I was colouring about every 6 weeks! I’m now down to getting my hair highlighted and blended into the root every 4-6 months and allowing the regrowth to come through in between. If you want a low maintenance hair cut this is the way to go. I ask for highlights and a root smudge to blend the colour with my natural colour. The less you colour, the healthier your hair and it’s all about finding what works for you.
TAKE YOUR VITAMINS
There are two vitamins I swear by for hair health and I take these daily. The first is a collagen supplement, and I love my daily collagen tablet, the Go Healthy Hair, Skin & Nails Beauty Support. The results I see from this little magic tablet are amazing, my hair grows quickly and feels stronger, plus my nails are stronger and healthier too. If you only buy one healthy hair vitamin, make it this one!
I also really love the Naked Harvest Collagen for hair growth too. I’ve been using the Bovine Pine Coconut Collagen and LOVE it, but for something different I’ve also just ordered the Marine Collagen. I’ll report back on how I find this one!
USE THE RIGHT TOOLS
My go-to shampoo right now is the Essano Expertise Volumising Shampoo. I love this stuff and I’ve used it for over two years now. It’s light enough on my fine hair, yet helps to give it a bit of a volume boost without weighing it down. I do a double wash every 2-3 days with this. I also use the matching Expertise Volumising Conditioner (on my ends only as it’s quite nourishing) and I love LOVE this stuff too. Are they 100% clean products? No, but they have fairly safe ingredients and I’m yet to find a 100% safe/green hair product that works as well as these!
I’ve also invested in a ghd Air Hairdryer which is professional quality and far nicer on the hair than the cheap ones. I blow dry my hair every second day (beats going to bed with wet hair!) and my hair is still healthy. I also use the Classic ghd for straightening my hair, but I only do this every couple of weeks or so.
The other thing I love are silk pillowcases. These cause far less knots and tangles in your hair and keep it so much more healthy! There are lots of different brands around and I’ve tried a few different ones. These Manuka Dreams ones are lovely, or for a more cost-effective option, try Cotton On!
FOCUS ON YOUR FOOD
Okay this sounds simple, but it’s so true. What you eat reflects in your hair health. If you drink plenty of water, and eat healthy, fresh and nourishing food, then your hair will look better. If you eat a lot of junk food, sugary foods, or oily foods then your hair will look flat and blah.
I always make sure I have my 2 litres of water a day, drink chai and matcha over coffee, and make sure I incorporate as many fresh and healthy foods as possible. I’ve also cut out refined sugars which has made a MASSIVE difference!
OILING YOUR HAIR
One trend that has been massive on Instagram and TikTok over the years is hair oiling. This isn’t a new practice as it’s been around for hundreds of years in some cultures. It is the practice of using certain oils on the hair before washing to help improve the hair health. This is something I used to do with coconut oil (read about my experience doing this here) , and I’m very keen to get back into this practice as I noticed massive improvements in the health and softness of my hair when I did. This time, I think I will use an oil designed specifically for hair.
