6 Tips for Transitioning Into Fall

7 Tips for Transitioning Into Fall

Is it just me, or is Daylight Savings throwing everyone at the moment? It’s dark now by 7pm which is both quite sad and also rather exciting, as I love nothing more than snuggling in bed and watching movies! It gets to 8pm now and I feel like it’s more like 10pm, so it’s safe to say I have been a total grandma lately and am in bed early!

The mornings are also starting to get that bit colder, and we even had a little bit of frost on the windshield of the car the other morning, so the colder days are well and truely on their way! In New Zealand, Fall or Autumn days usually start off pretty brisk, before blossoming into a gorgeous sunny day. Believe it or not, this time of the year often has the most perfect weather, and it’s also one of the prettiest times of year with all the leaves starting to change colours.

I’ve really started to notice I’ve had to make some adjustments to my wardrobe to cater for the cooler weather and this rather awkward time of the year. It’s not freezing cold, but it’s certainly not hot, and knowing what to wear can often come as a bit of a guessing game. So today I thought I would share my top 6 tips for transitioning into Fall, as well as sharing with you this very cute Fall inspired outfit! Of course, if you are heading into Spring, then you can also use these tips!

7 Tips for Transitioning Into Fall

1. Layers

I am all about layering in the cooler months! It can be so incredibly cold in the mornings and at night, but then turn out to be a lovely warm day once the sun is up. I hate being cold, so I’ll often wear a tank top, with a light layer over the top, then a cardi or jumper and a jacket. I can then easily take any of these layers off as needed.

Some great items for layering are cardis (I especially love the waterfall style cardigans as these go with everything), jumpers, and puffer vests. Vests are a great way to provide a little bit of extra warmth on those days where it’s not quite cold enough for a jacket or a coat. Camis and tanks layered under knitwear also help to provide an extra cosy layer.

2. Boots

When it comes to shoes, boots are my favourites. In fact they are one of my favourite things about the cooler months! As the weather gets a little chillier, I will often pair ankle boots with dresses (as this allows me to wear socks and keep my toes extra warm!). Over the knee boots also look gorgeous paired with dresses, and they have been a really popular style lately. You can also opt for open toe booties if you are after something a little more dressy.

3. Add a Jacket

Now is the perfect time to be wearing those lighter jackets that don’t get perhaps as much wear in the winter months. Biker jackets are really on trend this year, with leather and suede being two popular and stylish options. The humble waterfall jacket is also very much in style and pairs beautifully with both dresses and pants. Denim jackets are also very on-trend right now, with the classic cut (falling to hip height), and the oversized boyfriend jacket being two very popular options. Again, these work well with a range of outfits and come in a wide range of colours making them perfect to just throw on and go!

4. Accessorise

It’s officially hat and scarf season! Again, these are two layers that help to keep you warm, yet can be removed as the day warms up. There are so many cute scarves and hats available this year in a range of patterns. For Fall, you can’t go past a leopard print or check print scarf. In terms of hats, the baker boy style is very popular, as well as the classic pom-pom woollen hat.

5. Add Faux Fur

I love faux fur as it’s so snuggly and such a chic way to add another layer to an outfit. If it’s not quite cold enough to go the whole way and wear a faux fur coat, a gilet or vest is the perfect option, as is the faux fur collar. Many lighter wrap jackets come with these faux fur collars and you can also buy them separately to wear over a coat.

6. Add Tights

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you have to put away your summer dresses. I’ll often continue to wear my lighter dresses long into Fall and Winter with the simple addition of a pair of tights. Black opaque tights are my favourites and they look so cute paired with ankle boots. Again, tights are removable during the day if the weather warms up too!
