I’ve been using natural deodorants for nearly ten years now! Yip, it’s been nearly a whole decade since I stopped using traditional roll-ons and sprays, and I can honestly say I never looked back.
I always hated traditional roll-ons, that damp feeling under my arms always made me feel gross before I had even started my day. I knew that the majority of these products contained ingredients that aren’t so great for us, with the most popular being aluminium. Yip, when you use a roll on there’s a good chance you are rolling aluminium under your arms. Many also contain harmful chemicals like parabens, and phthalates which are known endocrine disruptors. This means they can cause hormonal imbalances and have been linked to health issues like breast cancer and low fertility in both women and men. Many people can often have allergic reactions to these harsh ingredients, including skin rashes and sensitivity.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and this means everything that you put on it is absorbed into your bloodstream. Under your arms is a particularly sensitive area where the skin is very thin, and therefore these chemicals are more quickly and easily absorbed, causing these endocrine and allergic issues.
For something that many of us use every single day, this is scary!
In that time I have tried A LOT of different natural deodorants (read my Schmidt’s Deodorant review here), but there’s been one that I keep coming back to and this is why I’ve created this Black Chicken Natural Deodorant review post. We are going to specifically focus on the Axilla Deodorant Paste. This stuff is freaking amazing and here’s why….

So how does it work?
Many traditional deodorants are both a deodorant (stops body odour) and an anti-perspirant. This means that it blocks your pores stopping you from physically sweating which can actually cause issues as your body is designed to be able to sweat.
The Black Chicken Natural Deodorant paste uses natural ingredients like Sodium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide and natural oils to prevent the bad bacteria from multiplying and causing a smell (neutralising body odour), while still allowing the good bacteria to keep working, meaning less odour, even when you’re not wearing any deodorant.
I will be honest, the Deodorant paste can take a little while to get used to, especially if you are used to a roll on or spray, as you need to scoop a little out of the pottle and rub it in with your fingers. While this sounds gross, it literally takes a minute, smells great, and you just wash your hands afterwards. Since it’s a paste it doesn’t go on wet, so there’s no damp feeling and you can get dressed right away.
Now that I am used to it, I 100% couldn’t go back to traditional deodorant. This stuff leaves me smelling good and odour free, even on the hottest of days. Plus it’s nice to know that my deodorant isn’t causing me any health issues (either now or down the track!)
One other thing to keep in mind, is that when you do make the swap to a natural deodorant you might find your body odour and sweat actually increases temporarily while you body and the good and bad bacteria even themselves out. The trick here is to just keep going, after a week or two you will find your body back to balance, and will actually notice the amount you sweat will begin to decrease as the good bacteria are allowed to work their magic.
